Our Research Strengths

The UTS School of Design’s senior supervisors all lead research clusters of PhD students, centred on key strength areas.

  • Critical Spatial Thinking: Design and Performative Practice
  • Data Poetics
  • Imagining Fashion Futures: Design and Material Culture Lab
  • Services, Product Service Systems and Products for a Circular Economy
  • Transformative Technology and the Power of Making

Critical Spatial Thinking: Design and Performative Practice

Led by Thea Brejzek, Professor for Spatial Theory and Lawrence Wallen, Professor and Head of School of Design

Working across the disciplines of spatial design, architecture, theatre, exhibition and media, this PhD program engages existing design and artistic competencies and applies them directly to questions of Design and Performative Practice. This research cluster is conducted in six to eight 2-day modules per academic year thus allowing for the participation of local, national and international candidates.

Data Poetics

Led by Dr Jacqueline Lorber Kasunic and Associate Professor Kate Sweetapple, in Visual Communication Design

The rapid increase in the digitisation of library and museum collections offers challenges and opportunities of how we explore, analyse, and make sense of cultural data. Situated within this new landscape, UTS’s Data Poetics expands the practices of data visualisation. The program foregrounds experimental design-led, practice-based research.

Imagining Fashion Futures: Design and Material Culture Lab

Led by Distinguished Professor Peter McNeil

UTS’s Imagining Fashion Futures: Design and Material Culture Lab (IFFL) is one of Australia’s only specialist research clusters to examine the tangible and intangible ways that fashion and design have shaped culture, society and bodies. Comprising a core of interdisciplinary design researchers and PhD candidates, IFFL undertakes traditional and practice-based research across fashion and design history and culture.

Services, Product Service Systems and Products for a Circular Economy

Led by Dr Susan Stewart, Senior Lecturer, Product Design

This research area understands new digital technologies and changing economies as providing opportunities for rethinking management of the life-cycle of products; with a focus on enabling Extended Producer Responsibility with strategies to achieve healthier human and environmental ecologies.

Transformative Technology and the Power of Making

Led by Professor Jennifer Loy, Director of Product Design and Research Lead for Advanced Technology Digital Fabrication

This PhD program provides a platform for product design researchers to respond to the disruptive potential of technology, in particular additive manufacturing (3D printing), and the implications of its ability to transform design, practice and production.  Study that engages with changing the means of production and the use of processes, artefacts and communication tools to empower cultural ideas and understandings, is explored through design-led research with cutting-edge additive manufacturing technology.
